Scott’s Top 20 Albums Ever

It is Saturday morning in Singapore.  I am not traveling and I am not thinking about work.  I am thinking about music

A couple friends of mine recently asked about music I played for them.  One one friend’s request, I wrote up a list of my favorite albums ever.  I really liked Duncan’s series on music so I wanted to respond with my own.  Most of these albums came to me by way of recommendation.  Maybe comments to this post will introduce me to another amazing album or two.

First off, this “top 20″ list is only of great albums. Albums that have moved me emotionally, made me dance, made me sing, and burned indelible melodies into my mind. I have loved all of these albums completely and differently. Like children, I cannot rank them for their relative awesomeness.

If you’re still interested, read on! I hope you will share your comments with me about these albums and some of your own all-time favorites.

Datacenter Optimization

The article I wrote on VMTurbo’s alternative to DRS generated an incredible amount of interest. I received numerous emails, Tweets, and a couple of comments. One comment led me to VKernel, one led me to CiRBA, and one slyly hinted of a sham in one partner’s offering.  This investigation has been fun and informative.

Today I am going to share with you some of my thoughts on datacenter optimization and why I think VMware’s partner community is succeeding where VMware is not.

vCenter Custom Alarms: Instruction, Tips, Tools

Half a year ago the Asia Pacific vSpecialist team made a fantastic acquisition in one David “Two Screws” Lloyd. David previously worked for a wonderful VMware and EMC customer in the UK and moved back to Australia. That is when we jumped on the opportunity to snap him up. In working with him in the labs recently, I have come to realize that David has incredible depth and breadth in the space of virtual infrastructure management.

Recently David sat down to share his tips on setting up alarms in vCenter. Most of VMware’s customers understand the power of custom alarming but few harness its value. Using an example of storage path failures, David created a video that walks its audience through the process of configuring a custom alarm using a tailor made executable that generates useful logging message in the vCenter OS’s event log.

VKernel’s Virtualization Management Index

Back in early December the folks at VKernel posted the results of a survey of their customers’ virtualization environments.  They named this work and its summary paper the Virtualization Management Index (VMI) [registration required].  I talked with VKernel CMO Bryan Semple when the first version was released and he recently sent me an update.  Some of VKernel’s observations are pretty interesting.  And I come to a similar conclusion as VKernel based on VMware’s data in the space: the market for datacenter optimization is very big and growing by the day.
